lana land _ overprint

The starting point of this work is the relation between an artist and art history. When thinking about a continuum of artistic succession, one usually speaks about the notion of Mimesis. However, Lana Land's work is not concerned with the ubiquitous and relevant phenomenon of inter-artistic imitation and inheriting. It is rather questioning the possibilities of juxtaposing - an artist to an artist, a work to a work , an epoch to an epoch - to then contemplate whether or not a dialogue is possible. Through selecting and combining, the artist herself comes into play. Sometimes, the result is unexpected; it speaks a new language/style and opens various ways of interpreting. When a work is paired with its opposite or complementary, it enters a dialogue with its antipode. This dialogue, and preferably a conversation, makes us experience the initial artwork in a new dynamic, and it enables new semiotic readings.
